How to get into the New York City Marathon: drawing or guaranteed entry?
Two ways in: the free drawing, around February 3, 2027 (~1 % of applicants got in for 2026), or an entry without the drawing, most of them guaranteed: qualifying time, 9+1 program, charity, or a tour operator for runners living outside the US. NYRR has not published any 2027 dates yet.

The drawing is free. If you are selected, the 2027 entry costs $333.11, or $269.66 for NYRR members, charged the same day and non-refundable.

Can you run the New York City Marathon without the lottery?
Yes: a man aged 18 to 34 who runs a marathon in under 2:53 in 2026 (women: 3:13) can enter the November 7, 2027 race without the lottery. The time is guaranteed if it is run at an NYRR race in New York; elsewhere, only the fastest in each category get in.

How does race weekend work? 2026 edition, to be reviewed for 2027
In 2026, bibs are collected at the Javits Center expo from Thursday 29 to Saturday 31 October, in a booked time slot, never on race day. On Sunday 1 November, transportation chosen in advance takes you to Staten Island, five waves start from 9:10 to 11:30 a.m. on the Verrazzano Bridge, and the finish is in Central Park.

| Bag drop No bag drop at the start. The bag handed out at the expo is dropped off in advance, on 30 and 31 October, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Central Park West (between 74th and 75th Streets). Bring old clothes to leave at the start. Without a checked bag, you get a poncho after the finish (to be checked). |
| Time limit No strict cut-off: the organisers follow a pace of 16 minutes per mile (~9:56 per km) from the start of the last wave. Slower than that, aid stations may be closed and you move to the sidewalk or the sweep bus. Medal for every finish before 10 p.m. |
